No one can completely predict what the workplace of the future will look like or how it will operate, but it is safe to say that it will be a world of contradictions that the new generations will need to master. They will have to stay both focused and adaptive — something that their elders did not have to do as much.
At the moment, the learning curve still looks steep. This is why hiring managers across the world are finding it a struggle to locate and retain millennial employees.
Being able to maneuver through completely different kinds of paths and succeeding at each one is becoming an increasing norm in today’s workforce, which is why millennials need to hone their skills. They face a much more volatile workplace than ever before, so here are four ways for them to adapt.
1. Focus on culture
While money is obviously a necessary part of working, the compensation a job provides should not be the sole factor that is considered. A paycheck on its own is not going to lead to your happiness or emotional well-being, and no amount of money makes a job with an unhealthy company culture worth it.
That isn’t to say that finding a high-paying job should be something you shy away from, but you also want to consider whether the culture is a good fit, too.
The aspects that will help you earn more over time are engagement and learning, and both of these things stem from a company’s culture. Look for firms that make it a priority to provide training for employees. For this reason, if a paycheck is the only appeal of a position, there is a good chance you won’t be happy at the firm for very long.
2. Don’t be scared to move around
Unlike in previous generations, when it was perfectly reasonable to work for the same company for the majority of a career, in today’s job market that is no longer realistic. While that dedication is admirable, in today’s climate you are going to have to move around if you want to move up.
While you are at a company, you must be completely loyal, but you should always be networking to learn about new opportunities. Consider networking as marketing yourself, just as a business would promote a product or service to the public. If the right opportunity arises, do not be afraid to move on.
3. Listen to the whole team to find your voice
The workplace isn’t supposed to resemble an episode of “Game of Thrones.” You must trust what you know, who you are, and what your company is about, but you also must be open to listening to other members of the team.
For both the company, and your position in it, to grow, you have to rely on your most important asset — your team. Having the ability to listen to the right people and then learn from them is a vital skill for anyone who wants to advance in the workplace of the future.
4. Keep the balance
No matter what age, one of the most challenging contradictions to master is a healthy work-life balance. There is no guarantee that it will become any easier in the future, although workplaces are becoming more flexible. Because no matter where you work, if you want to get to the top, you’ll have to put in many, many hours. There is no way to become a senior executive solely from working 9 to 5.
Millennials need to be prepared to invest a lot of time in getting established in a firm, whether they are looking to work their way up through a company’s ranks or they want to start their own business.
In addition to staying late, try to learn every aspect of your industry, and never be shy to ask questions when appropriate.
That being said, while it won’t always seem possible (and definitely will not be easy), remember that the people in your life are the most important part. A work-life balance may seem elusive, but continually challenging yourself to figure out a way to get a balance will ensure you remain happy no matter how the workplace changes in years to come.
